Shopify Server Side Tracking Using Google Analytics

Client: Premium Fashion Brand

The Challenge

This Shopify fashion store was losing 40% of their conversion data due to Safari's ITP (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) and browser ad-blockers. Their Google Analytics 4 showed significantly lower numbers than their actual Shopify backend, making it impossible to accurately measure ROAS and optimize ad spend.

Our Solution

We implemented a complete server-side tracking setup using Google Tag Manager Server Container. We created a custom first-party subdomain (metrics.theirstore.com) to route all analytics data, bypassing third-party cookie restrictions. We also implemented advanced event deduplication to ensure clean, accurate data flow from Shopify to GA4.

Technical Implementation

  • Custom GTM Server Container deployed on Google Cloud Platform
  • First-party subdomain configuration (metrics.theirstore.com)
  • Shopify webhook integration for server-to-server data transmission
  • Advanced event deduplication using unique event IDs
  • Cookie lifespan extension from 7 days to 180 days
  • Ad-blocker bypass implementation

💡 In Simple Terms

In simple terms: We built a secure, invisible bridge between their Shopify store and Google Analytics. Instead of relying on the customer's browser (which often blocks tracking), we send data directly from their store's server. This means every sale is tracked accurately, even if the customer uses an ad-blocker or Safari deletes cookies. Their analytics now match their actual sales perfectly.
